Culture is an important part of our identity. Culture is reflected in how we live our life, our priorities, our values and our world view. When we are surrounded by others of the same background as us, culture is invisible. It's simply the way things are, the norm. It only comes into awareness when we meet people of other cultures. The intercultural space of such encounters can be stimulating and exiting, but it can also lead to misunderstandings and conflict arising from varying world views and values, and possibly different communication styles.
In Australia, the cross-cultural encounter between Aboriginal people and the dominant culture is often defined by legal frameworks, in particular the Native Title Act (Cth) 1993, and various state heritage legislations.
Culture Matters Consulting offers specialised services relating to many aspects of the intercultural encounter, including in legal settings such as court processes, in the context of legislative requirements, in processes requiring specialised cross-cultural communication, and in cultural awareness training.
